Many people have wondered what they can do to make their glow sticks last longer after a party or concert so I decided to do an experiment and record them for everyone. The results will surprise you (they surprised me).
There are five common myths of where to put a glow stick to make it last longer: refrigerator, freezer, under a light bulb, microwave and warm water. With 15 sticks, I tested all 5 locations at 2 different times (right after it was cracked & after 4 hours of being cracked) and let one set run its course throughout its glowing life. Every stick was then at their particular location for 1 hour except for the sticks in the microwave. They were in there for 7 seconds and sat the rest of the hour.
After round 1 (going in right after cracking), the sticks in the refrigerator and freezer came out brighter than when they had gone in after being shaken up again. All three warm locations had lost half of their glow already. The microwave stick initially became twice as bright after the heat but as quickly as it gained its glow, it lost it.
When it was time for round two, the sticks had lost some of its glow from time alone. When I put one stick in the microwave, it glowed just as bright as the first one but lost it twice as fast as the first. The warm water, light bulb and refrigerator made no impact whereas the freezer actually took away half of its luminous glow. After 8 hours (round 3), the glow sticks were still going, of course not as bright.
I originally cracked all of the sticks at 2:30pm on Wednesday, February 8th. The next morning at 9
am, all of the glow sticks were still glowing and they were all glowing at the same level as shown in the picture to the right. My experiments results had shown that no matter what you do to a glow stick, no particular way will make them last longer. They will live their life to the fullest no matter what you do to them; they’re strong.
IT’S A MYTH!!!!
